Twitter…Is It Dead?

by Ryan on March 6, 2009 at 10:27 PM

After picking up dinner on my way home from work tonight, I came  home to my wife watching E! News. I sat down with her and began to watch. Not really paying attention, all of a sudden I heard the word “Twitter” come out of Giuliana Rancic’s mouth. I immediately started paying attention. Giuliana was talking about an interview she had just done with Julia Roberts where she accepted questions via Twitter. Initially, I thought the concept was cool. I guess I still do, however, upon learning that Giuliana and Ryan Seacrest both have Twitter accounts I couldn’t help but think…Twitter is dead.

Ok, Twitter is definitely not dead and I can’t really take any credit for being a Twitter pioneer.  I actually just started using it fairly recently. So, I can’t dis Giuliana or Ryan Seacrest too much.

Ever since I started using Twitter, I’ve seen the real potential that this microblogging technology has. Tonight, seeing it on E! News, underscored this. The world seems to get smaller and smaller with every passing day. The potential for communication and developing conversations online gets easier and easier every day.

A few questions I am pondering. How effective do  you think Twitter will really be for businesses? I see many business uses for this technology, but I am curious if it will really become mainstream with businesses (or atleast  how many businesses will truly find or realize value in what Twitter offers?)

Anyway, just some thoughts. It’s late, so I will leave it at that for now. Below are a few related articles about Twitter that I found interesting and wanted to share.

If used correctly, I think that Twitter can be a very effective business tool. I am coaching clients to use it from time to time. It does not make sense for all business. It can drive traffic, raise credibility for a person’s particular are of expertise and be a great networking tool. But if you become too sales-y or share too much miscellaneous personal stuff the result can be very, very bad!

@Andi – I agree that if Twitter is used properly, it can be a beneficial tool. I do think it is an interesting channel to be monitored. For my current employer, we’ve been toying with the idea of using Twitter for support. We are also using it to market corporate blog posts, but I don’t think we’ve nailed down a great use for it yet. I am interested in seeing how our target market/audience pick up on it. It’s interesting to me that there are many people out there who say they are “social media experts” and I saw a great post about that on Why No-one is a Social Media Expert – http://www.skelliewag.org/why-no-one-is-a-social-media-expert-895.htm
